CURRENT VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE KITE TRUST

We’re looking for enthusiastic and keen people to join our volunteer team, in supporting our work with LGBTQ+ young people across Peterborough and Cambridgeshire. Our current vacancies are:

Youth Support Volunteer (for groups in Cambridge, March, Peterborough, Ely, Huntingdon and Wisbech)

Purpose of task:  

To support the Youth Worker in delivering high quality youth work activities to young LGBT+ through scheduled regular groups.  

Specific actions of task to be completed: 

  • Support in the delivery of weekly youth work sessions 
  • Support for LGBT+ young people in youth work and occasional volunteering 

Desired Outcomes: 

  • Regular support to Youth Worker
  • Good understanding of the young people accessing our services and their individual needs 
  • Good understanding of other local services and referral pathways to those services 
  • Safe, positive weekly activities for LGBT+ young people 

Designated supervisor for the task: Youth Worker  

Number of hours needed to complete task: 2 hours a week and various on agreement with the Administration and Volunteer Officer and Youth Worker  

Skills and experience needed: 

  • Experience with working with young people  
  • Understanding of diversity and issues effecting young LGBT+ people 
  • Understanding of safeguarding and best practice when working with young people 

Online Youth Group Volunteer

Purpose of task:

  • Regular support to Youth Worker running TKT youth sessions  
  • Supporting safe, positive weekly activities for LGBT+ young people
  • Good understanding of the young people accessing our services 
  • Good understanding of other local services  

Specific actions of task to be completed:

  • Monitor the chat and respond verbally or textually in the online session  
  • Help Mute people if they forget to turn their mics off  
  • Use the chat to share the group agreements—or remind young people when they accidentally break the group agreements.   
  • Admit people from the waiting room if the name is recognised  
  • Support the Youth Worker’s delivery of activities, and briefly take over delivery if the Youth Worker needs to admit someone to the session 

Designated supervisor for youth group volunteer: The Kite Trust Youth Worker  

Number of hours needed to complete task: Anywhere between 1-5 hours a month depending on how much the individual wants to contribute. 

Skills and experience needed: 

  • Good communication skills 
  • Understanding of diversity and issues effecting young LGBT+ people 
  • Understanding of safeguarding and best practice when working with young people 
  • Mandatory volunteer training will be provided to volunteers at induction stage and further training opportunities will be offered there after  
  • Provide the volunteer experiences that help them develop professionally and feel affirmed in themselves 

Training – Lived Experience Volunteer

Objectives of role:  

  • Provide training recipients with a deeper insight into the lives of LGBT+ people 
  • This can be by sharing personal story of volunteer if they are comfortable with this
  • Support half day and full day training sessions provided by TKT 

Outline of tasks expected in role:  

  • To support training by preparing questions in advance with the Programme Manager (Schools and Training). 
  • This will be around 30 minutes of input in the training sessions themselves 

Designated supervisor for lived experience volunteer: Programme Manager (Schools and Training)  

Number of hours needed to complete task: Up to 4 hours  

Skills and experience needed: 

  • Good communication skills 
  • Understanding of diversity and issues effecting young LGBT+ people 
  • Understanding of safeguarding and best practice when working with young people

Training – Online Support Volunteer

Purpose of task:  To support the delivery of The Kite Trust current training online sessions.  

Specific actions of task to be completed: 

  • Monitor the chat and respond textually in the online session  
  • Help Mute people if they forget to turn their mics off 
  • Alert the trainer to any significant technical glitches during the session  

Desired Outcomes: To support trainers of online training sessions when they are delivering training sessions for The Kite Trust.  

Designated supervisor for the task: Programme Manager (Schools and Training).  

Number of hours needed to complete task: Flexible – as and when needed agreed with Programme Manager (Schools and Training) and Administration and Volunteer Officer.  

Skills and experience needed: 

  • Communication skills 
  • Organised 
  • Administration 
  • Knowledge of Zoom Video Meetings  
  • Understanding of diversity and issues effecting young LGBT+ people 
  • Understanding of safeguarding and best practice when working with young people 

Fundraising and Events Volunteer

We are also keen to hear from you if you would like to volunteer in a less regular way to support other aspects of our work such as:

  • Helping to plan events
  • Stewarding or helping to set up on the day
  • Supporting the smooth running of fundraising or publicity campaigns (e.g. sharing content online or distributing flyers and posters)

Web Content Volunteer

Purpose of task: Create content in line with the Creating Content for The Kite Trust Guide 

Specific actions of task to be completed: 

  • Create content for: Instagram on topics agreed with the Comms and Engagement Officer
  • Create blog posts on  reviews of books or TV shows that LGBT+ young people in TKT’s community would enjoy.  

Desired Outcomes: 

  •  To improve the amount of content available to access on our social media channels and website.  
  • To increase the number of people following us on Instagram, Facebook and, Twitter  

Designated supervisor for the task: Comms and Engagement Officer  

Number of hours needed to complete task: Various – ad hoc tasks.  

Skills and experience needed: 

  • Good understanding of Instagram, Facebook and, Twitter  
  • Editing experience such as: InDesign, Photoshop or Canva  
  • Good communication skills 
  • Understanding of SEO is desirable but not essential  
  • Understanding of safeguarding and best practice when working with young people
